Movement Therapy Sessions

Movement Therapy is the practice of cultivating an ability to listen to the body and allowing the body to guide us. It seeks to help clients discover how to be more authentic, at ease, and efficient in their body and with their movement. The practitioner acts as a collaborator and facilitator, supporting clients in developing ways of listening to body sensations, messages, and wisdom. Clients gain awareness about their movement patterns and postural habits, and how these relate to tension, pain, and emotional conditions. Exercises, imagery, anatomical diagrams, verbal instruction, and hands-on techniques are used to educate clients about body organization, movement, and movement potential.

Session Types

Injury Recovery/Rehabilitation

Injury recovery involves more than strengthening or lengthening muscles. Whether from a car accident, a stroke or ongoing chronic pain, rehabilitation can involve the need to create a new orientation for, and awareness of, the body.  By recalling the body’s wisdom and developing new mind-maps we can not only reduce the pain and discomfort, but also find new ways to move that create even more ease and coordination than before.

Athletic/Dance Performance

I work with athletes and dancers to find the muscular support and connection needed to keep their performance pain-free and vital.  I provide movement assessment and design custom movement and exercise programs, so my clients move with more ease and power.  I have worked extensively with Tango dancers, developing tools to accelerate their learning. Whether you want better balance or more pleasure while running in your neighborhood, these sessions can help.

Somatic Fitness (Pilates Plus)

Together, we create a developing fitness practice that not only helps you meet your current goals, but helps you develop the knowledge and skills to move better for a lifetime.  I use developmental movement, Tonic Function and Laban/Bartneneiff Movement Analysis to augment traditional Pilates and Yoga techniques to create more dynamic and effective fitness practices.  My classes and private sessions seek to be fun and challenging, while leaving your body feeling energized and spacious.

Social Anxiety/Emotional Trauma

It’s clear that everyday stress can be held in the body, affecting movement, health, and well-being. In the same way, emotional experiences are housed in the body. By creating awareness of the body’s sensed/somatic/felt experience, we can tap into these dynamics to help recognize their effects awork towards releasing them.

Self Improvement/Well Being

A growing number of people have started to use movement therapy to achieve goals beyond eliminating of pain. By developing greater self-awareness, you can have a deeper understanding of  yourself, learn ways to regulate stress, and be more adaptive in personal relationship. Similar to meditation, this practice helps us to become more aware of what is happening inside of ourselves and that allows us to respond in a more spontaneous, adaptive way that is appropriate to the given situation as opposed to acting out of habitual pattern.
